Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read or write. Storytime nurtures six important pre-reading skills: narrative skills, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, print motivation, vocabulary, and print awareness.
Storytime at Douglas County Libraries emphasizes five simple activities — reading, talking, writing, singing and playing—that help children learn the skills to be ready to read. You can build on your child's learning by incorporating these activities into your day as well. A great way to do this (and earn fun prizes along the way) is to sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and print your reading log. Exposure to lots of books is a great predictor of reading readiness and school success.
